Mark Smith
Chief Financial Officer
Houston, TX
Mark started his days as a helper as a young boy. From roof repairs to shingle installation, he was working hard since he was legally able. Mark got into field supervising after doing his time as a shingle installer. He did over ten years supervising, and then got into sales. He worked in Rhode Island and Connecticut as an insurance adjuster during Hurricane Irene.
Just before Hurricane Irene hit the east coast, Mark obtained his certification as licensed insurance adjuster. Mark has an associate’s degree in Industrial Design, and achieved excellence at Schlumberger as a designer. He is also certified in the “Steep Slope Pro Field Guide Test” from GAF.
Mark has been with Ernie Smith & Sons from the beginning, in different roles. After taking a hiatus with Schlumberger for a few years, Mark is now our Operations Manager. He oversees all our jobs (repairs and new installs), all production operations, and company strategy. Mark is also over our warranty department.
The ability to help people is what keeps him going. He’s dedicated to customer service, and wants to see the roofing industry improve across the board. He enjoys analyzing financial and operational data for areas of improvement.
In his spare time, Mark loves spending time with his wife and his five wonderful children. He enjoys volunteering for church activities and church work, reading books (history, business, etc.,) and playing soccer.

See All ProjectsTwo-Story Reroof in the Firethorne Neighborhood
Katy, TX
This partial two-story home in Katy, Texas, is a good example of a fairly complex residential roof job. The Katy home had suffered hail damage. The homeowner was referred to our company by a previous customer in the same neighborhood. We helped the homeowner file an insurance claim for a new roof and helped them obtain a loan to assist with the insurance deductible.
After removing approximately 3700 square feet of the old roofing material, we installed the exact same GAF High Definition style shingle, including the same previous Charcoal color.

Structural Repair & New Roof
Friendswood, TX
At this Friendswood home, a large-scale post-haste rafter repair project was initiated upon the discovery of significant numbers of faulty and rotted framing members, and a total of eight existing 12’ 2 x 6 rafters were replaced.
After also replacing eleven sheets of plywood, we installed a foil-based aluminum thermal underlayment, a new metal chimney base and storm collar, a new chimney spark arrestor, and a GAF High Definition shingle with complimentary GAF components and accessories.

New Deck & Roof for a Repeat Customer
Galveston, TX
We first replaced Dr. R’s roof in 2003, so when it was time for a new roof after Hurricane Ike, he reached out to us again.
An Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration laminate Shasta White shingle completed this Galveston, Texas roof job – plus the obligatory final engineer inspection and sign-off. Shasta White is a great choice for Galveston, with a “green energy” touch that reflects the bright Galveston sunlight and helps keep the house cool.

A Formidable Re-Roof in the Silvercreek Community
Manvel, TX
This roof in Manvel, Texas, is a great example of a complex job that simply can’t be rushed. Unlike other basic “up and over” roofs, this steep and two-story home had every possible challenge. We call this type of roof “cut-up,” because of all the many different angles and planes.
There were plenty of vertical and horizontal roof walls that required meticulous, detailed flashing installations, multiple intersecting planes and valleys, dormers, and other smaller penetrations such as skylights, chimneys, and wind turbine air vents.

Complete Siding Makeover for an Older Home
Santa Fe, TX
After removing the existing 4 x 8 “T-111” plywood exterior on this Santa Fe home, we discovered yet another layer of siding that had to be stripped – an old solid wood tongue and groove style dating back to at least the 1940s.
We installed beautiful Cedar Mill-style James HardiePlank lap siding on this older shotgun-style home in Santa Fe. Lastly, the larger lap siding is fastened in place, and two coats of Sherwin Williams Super Paint are applied for a beautiful finishing touch.

New Shingles for a Hail-Damaged Roof
Sugar Land, TX
This simple but steep one-story gable-style home in Sugar Land, Texas, incurred hail damage and was also leaking in at least one area. We helped the homeowner file an insurance claim to get a new roof, including a necessary supplemental payment.
We removed the existing “three-tab” composition shingle roof and installed a 25-year warranty GAF Royal Sovereign Weathered Gray shingle.

Insurance Claim & A New Roof
Texas City, TX
Matt Dravis contacted the client and let him know that he could inspect the roof for further damages and help him file the insurance claim for a new roof.
The customer immediately recognized the value in getting a new roof, especially when any repairs necessary would be equal to or greater than his deductible. We were able to install the bulletproof StormShield Preferred system on his new roof in Texas City, TX.

New Shingle & Flat Roof for Wind-Damaged Home
Victoria, TX
This particular roof was not only steep and complex, but the flat porch and walkway add-ons connecting the house to the originally detached garage concealed significant major structural damage.
Flat roofing material included CertainTeed brand Flintlastic® SA SBS modified bitumen roofing membrane. The remaining greater part of the home was high-pitched and received all new materials and components topped with GAF Timberline HD Slate colored shingles with matching GAF Royal Sovereignty ridge and cut-up GAF Pro Start starter shingles.
